Nine Students Receive Cox
Inspirational Heroes Awards
Meraux Foundation Awards Scholarships
To 60 St. Bernard Graduates
Nunez GIVES A HOOT About Chalmette High Class of 2020
Nine St. Bernard Parish School District students were named
2020 Cox Inspirational Heroes – an award that recognizes stu-
dents’ accomplishments, unwavering courage, and positive atti-
tudes.
The nine students were Khia Bienemy of W. Smith Elementary,
Jai-mahad Buie of Arabi Elementary, Cameron Burkett of Joseph
J. Davies Elementary, Gabrielle Griffin of Lacoste Elementary, Ter-
on Lewis of Chalmette High, Isabella Meyer of St. Bernard Middle,
Tessie Riggio of Andrew Jackson Middle, Jackson Vega of Arlene
Meraux Elementary, and To’Maj Washington of Trist Middle.
Cox will be recognizing the 2020 Cox Inspirational Heroes vir-
tually and recently congratulated these heroes in the Advocate
newspaper.
Supervisor of Special Education Cheramie Kerth said St. Ber-
nard Parish School District is proud of these amazing and deserv-
ing students.
“Each of these students is such an inspiration,” she said. “We
are so grateful for the Cox Inspirational Heroes Program for their
continued commitment to celebrating our students especially
during these trying times.”
The Arlene and Joseph Meraux
Charitable Foundation announced
the Class of 2020 recipients of its an-
nual scholarship program today. The
charity awards 60 scholarships each
year: fifty for academic achievement,
four for artistic accomplishment, and
six for Career Technical Education
(CTE). To date, the Meraux Founda-
tion has awarded some 900 scholar-
ships to St. Bernard Parish public high school graduates.
This year's seniors did not get to enjoy the typical pomp and
circumstance that comes with graduation because of the coro-
navirus pandemic, so the St. Bernard Parish School District pro-
duced a video series to celebrate the students' achievements. It
includes a video message by Meraux Foundation President Rita
Gue.
“While, especially now, the future seems uncertain, we are
counting on you and your talents to make it even brighter. You
Nunez Community College announced
on May 20, 2020 the creation of a $500 "We
Give A Hoot About You" Scholarship for ev-
ery graduating senior in the Chalmette High
School Class of 2020.
Dr. Tina Tinney, Chancellor of Nunez,
made the announcement via video in a
congratulatory message to the graduates.
Chancellor Tinney shared, "We are 'Peli-
can Proud' of the CHS graduates and their
accomplishments during this very different
school year. Nunez wanted to find a way to
recognize the students' potential and sup-
port their future academic endeavors."
With that goal in mind, the "We Give A
Hoot" Scholarship was adopted. When a
2020 CHS graduate enrolls in six or more
credit hours during the summer 2020 term,
they will receive a $500 scholarship to as-
sist with their summer tuition. All classes for
the summer term will be held online. Suc-
cessful completion of all summer classes
could result in an additional award for the
Fall 2020 semester.
Word spread quickly about the awesome
opportunity for students to accelerate their
academics by starting this summer instead
of the Fall. Proud CHS 2020 graduate, Len-
non Turner, shared his excitement about the
scholarship, "I'm proud to choose Nunez
Community College as my next step. In
these trying times when it's safer for ev-
eryone to stay close to home, Nunez CC is
there for me, making sure I don't lose any
time and providing me with the classes I
need that will transfer to the university of my
choice in the future."

THE SCALISE CAPITOL REPORT
Wednesday, May 20, 2020 - The St. Bernard News State News 3
Honoring Our Heroes on Memorial Day
Freedom isn't free. Today we honor the extraordinary courage
of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep America free and
safe.
I'm grateful for our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and
Coast Guardsmen who rise to every challenge so we can live in the
greatest country in the history of the world!
I hope you joined me in honoring these heroes on Memorial Day.
Fighting to Protect Louisiana’s Offshore Energy Producers
This week, I sent a letter to the U.S. Department of the Inte-
rior (DOI) Secretary David Bernhardt requesting DOI to expedite
the royalty relief process to protect jobs, keep businesses afloat,
and ensure America is still the dominant energy producer once we
emerge from the Coronavirus pandemic.
In 2019, energy production in the Gulf of Mexico supported near-
ly 500,000 jobs, over $5 billion in government revenues, and $155
million in coastal restoration funding in Louisiana alone. Energy
producers in the Gulf of Mexico, and the companies who service
them, not only support the communities and businesses in South-
east Louisiana, but our nation’s economy and overall energy and
national security. Moreover, for Louisiana, revenues from offshore
production have provided lifesaving investments to restore our
state’s coastline. We must ensure Gulf of Mexico energy producers
survive this challenging time, and I will continue fighting to protect
the jobs, communities, and coastal restoration projects supported
by Louisiana’s offshore energy producers.
China Must be Held Accountable for Endangering Frontline
Heroes
The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis held a virtu-
al briefing this week on protecting frontline and essential workers. I
used this briefing to urge House Democrats to hold China account-
able for lying about Coronavirus and jeopardizing the health and
safety of our frontline heroes in the first place. Click here to view
my remarks.
I thank all of our frontline heroes — nurses, doctors, EMTs, gro-
cery store workers, truck drivers, janitors, factory workers in es-
sential industries — and the millions of Americans who have re-
sponded to the call. Because of people like you, the virus has met
its match and will be defeated, and I will continue fighting to hold
China accountable for endangering our frontline heroes.
Community Updates and Good News of the Week
HHS announced $98.5 million in funding for Louisiana Skilled
Nursing Facilities (SNFs) impacted by COVID-19. Nursing
homes are an important part of our health care system, and
this funding will provide additional resources to help these fa-
cilities care for their residents and protect health care workers
on the front lines of the fight against this pandemic.
President Trump declared churches and other houses of wor-
ship as essential, and called on governors across the country
to allow them to reopen this weekend. Click here for guidance
from the CDC to help communities of faith keep their staff and
congregations safe.
President Trump is sending more relief to farmers and ranchers
hard hit by the Coronavirus crisis. This is huge for all the men
and women working day in and day out to keep our nation's
food supply strong and safe.
As of May 21, FEMA, HHS, and the private sector combined
have coordinated the delivery of or are currently shipping: 83.4
million N95 respirators, 140.2 million surgical masks, 11.9 mil-
lion face shields, 28.6 million surgical gowns, and over 1 billion
gloves.
FEMA has made 588 deliveries of medical supplies to nursing
homes in 52 of 53 states and territories. FEMA is coordinating
two shipments totaling a 14-day supply of personal protective
equipment to all 15,400 Medicaid and Medicare-certified nurs-
ing homes. The shipments are meant to supplement existing
efforts to provide equipment to nursing homes.
It is an honor to represent you in Congress. For more information
please visit my website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
God Bless,
Steve Scalise, House Republican Whip
The Helis Foundation Partners with Louisiana Endowment for the
Humanities to Contribute to Emergency Relief Grants Program
The Helis Foundation has
joined forces with the Louisiana
Endowment for the Humanities
to help protect New Orleans’
critical cultural institutions and
organizations by contributing a
major gift to the LEH’s Louisiana
Culture Care Fund.
The fund provides emer-
gency relief grants to human-
ities organizations impacted by
the COVID-19 pandemic, with
awards ranging between $3,000
and $20,000 and designated for
operational expenses.
The Helis Foundation’s gift
will support organizations with
a strong humanities focus in the
greater New Orleans area. Ac-
cording to recent data collected
by the LEH, cultural organiza-
tions in the greater New Orleans
area—hit hardest by the pan-
demic—are facing over $17 mil-
lion in lost revenue as a result of
closures, loss of donations and
more.
“Now more than ever, The
Helis Foundation is committed
to doing everything we can to
support and protect New Orle-
ans’ cultural landscape,” said
David Kerstein, president of The
Helis Foundation. “The LEH has
a proven track record of efficacy
and diligence, and by contribut-
ing to the Louisiana Culture Care
Fund, we can be sure that funds
will be quickly and responsibly
distributed to places that need
it the most.”
The initial funding for the Lou-
isiana Culture Care Fund was
provided by the National En-
dowment for the Humanities
(NEH) and the federal CARES
Act. To date, the LEH has
awarded more than $375,000 in
grants to 42 humanities organi-
zations in 18 parishes, with ap-
plications reviewed on a rolling
basis to provide funds as quick-
ly as possible.
“Our state’s cultural resourc-
es are threatened like never be-
fore,” said Miranda Restovic,
executive director and president
of the LEH. “The Helis Founda-
tion’s support allows us to con-
tinue the important work of pro-
tecting these resources—after
all, Louisiana wouldn’t be this
amazing, fascinating place with-
out our history and our people
and all that they create.”
Louisiana Culture Care Fund
grants supported by The Helis
Foundation’s gift are available
to 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural
organizations in the New Orle-
ans area with a strong human-
ities focus, such as museums,
historic sites and archives, as
well as the city’s diverse array
of humanities-focused media,
festivals and more. For more
information about how the hu-
manities are defined, visit www.
neh.gov/about.
The funds are designated for
operational expenses, including
but not limited to: staff retention
(payroll and benefits), rent, mort-
gage and utilities. Awards are
based on the annual operating
budget of the applicant organi-
zation. Applications will be ac-
cepted through June 30, or until
funds are expended. A sample
application may be found here.
All Louisiana Culture Care Fund
applications are subject to the
same rigorous review process—
details on criteria are at https://
www.leh.org/louisianaculture-
carefund/.

Citizens who want to share information with detectives about
criminal activity pertaining to St. Bernard Parish or any of its res-
idents, can do so anonymously through the St. Bernard Sheriff’s
Office Criminal Investigations Bureau’s new tip hotline, (504) 271-
TIPS or 8477, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
The new criminal activity tip hotline is patterned after the Sher-
iff’s Office Special Investigations Division’s narcotics hotline, (504)
271-DOPE or 3673, which has for several decades been a suc-
cessful tool in the fight against the drug epidemic.
Tipsters who have information they feel would be valuable to
detectives can call the TIP hotline to share information, 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. Citizens can share information pertaining to
cases involving things such as theft, robbery, burglary or even a
murder. Sheriff Pohlmann said all calls will be acted upon.
“Our DOPE hotline has been an essential tool in our fight against
illegal drug activity in St. Bernard Parish for many years,” the
Sheriff said, “and our hope is the criminal activity TIP hotline will
be just as successful by helping detectives quickly solve major
crimes and continue to keep St. Bernard and its residents safe.”
If a detective isn’t available to answer, the Sheriff said callers
can leave a detailed message, and either choose to provide their
contact information, or remain anonymous.
“We understand citizens’ need to remain anonymous in certain
circumstances,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “Choosing to leave your
name and telephone number is your choice. Doing so does not
mean your personal information will be released. It will simply as-
sist us in any follow-up questions we may have.”
The Sheriff reminds residents who are in danger or in need of
immediate assistance to call 911. Non-emergency issues such as
requesting to speak with a deputy can be handled by calling (504)
271-2501.
The Sheriff’s Office also has a Traffic hotline, (504) 278-7677,
where residents can report continued speeding issues in their
neighborhood.

8 Movie Reviews Wednesday, May 20, 2020 - The St. Bernard News
It is time to celebrate Tom Cruise week
as three of his outstanding films have been
re-mastered in HD 4K! Top Gun (PARA-
MOUNT 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital) looks
fresh to the eye and this action-packed
thrill-ride Directed by Tony Scott has been
aggrandized in full HD for a more intense
viewing! TG 4K will be released on May 19th
and will include New Explorations of the
Film’s Legacy featuring All-New Interviews.
Here is a heart-pounding combination of
action, music and incredible aerial photog-
raphy has helped make Top Gun the block-
buster hit of 1986. Top Gun takes a look at
the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy's
prestigious fighter weapons school. Tom Cruise is superb as Lt.
Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a daring young flyer whose out to be-
come the best. And Kelly McGillis sizzles as the civilian instructor
who teaches Maverick a few things you can't learn in a classroom.
The outstanding cast also includes: Val Kilmer as Iceman, and An-
thony Edwards as Goose. EXTRAS: English Dolby Atmos, French,
Portuguese, Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital, The Legacy of Top Gun, On
Your Six - Thirty Years of Top Gun, Commentary by Filmmakers
and Naval Experts, Danger Zone: The Making of Top Gun (6-Part
Documentary), Multi-Angle Storyboards, Best of the Best: Inside
the Real Top Gun and Tom Cruise Interviews and More!
And now you can make it a TC marathon with two more ac-
tion-packed favorites: Days Of Thunder and War Of The Worlds.
Both films arrive on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray May 19, 2020! What a
Fabulous Film from director Tony Scott! Now celebrating its 30th
anniversary in 2020, Days Of Thunder (Par-
amount 4K Ultra HD + Digital – original re-
lease date: 1990), you will sit on the edge of
your couch as HD features some of the most
spectacular racing action ever captured on
film! The movie further cemented Cruise’s
status. The new 4K release includes a brand-
new featurette looking back on the produc-
tion with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. I can
say Tom is one dedicated actor, and he is
loyal to his fans. It’s true, after seeing him
spend hours with fans and finally meeting
him for an interview at the AMC Elmwood
Theater for the premiere of “Jack Reacher:
Never Go Back!”
Here comes Number Three on Holly-
wood’s Best Hit List! Directed by Steven
Spielberg, War of The Worlds (Paramount
4K Ultra HD + Blu-Ray + Digital) celebrates
its 15th anniversary in 2020. Cruise took on
the starring role in this contemporary retell-
ing of the H.G. Wells classic, which earned
over $600M worldwide. Now see all the
mysteries as the new 4K presents the film in
vivid colors, but also you get over an hour of
previously released bonus content, includ-
ing multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes,
production diaries, a look at the characters,
Designing the Enemy: Tripods and Aliens,
Scoring WOTW, We Are Not Alone, Galleries and More!
Mary J Blige delivers a soulful perfor-
mance in the Digital release (5/19 in all plat-
forms) Body Cam (Paramount), a murder
mystery with some supernatural overtones!
Blige plays Renee, a cop, who has just been
put back into police service after a difficult
time because of the loss of her son who
drowned in a neighbor’s pool. With a rookie
(Nat Wolff), both witness a murder involving
the police! When a routine traffic stop re-
sults in the unexplained, grisly death of her
colleague, Renee finds some found footage
on a Body Cam of the incident and will play
for her eyes only. As the attacks mount, she
races to understand the supernatural force behind them. DIRECT-
ED BY Malik Vitthal, who slowly builds up tension that keeps you
in suspense until the last frame of film, this is quite a golden gem
filmed right here in New Orleans and surrounding areas! Yvette La-
place did a great job finding local locations to best serve the film’s
ghostlike theme, and most effective, is Blige performing in front of
a long shot that showcases the Crescent City Connection, a twin
span bridge all festooned in lights that looks wonderful on screen
and flatters New Orleans. Other locations in the credits include not
only Orleans Parish, but St. Bernard Parish (where my studio is
located), Jefferson Parish and the Jefferson’s Corner’s Office. A
simple but effective thriller, the film was written by Nicholas McCa-
rthy and Richmond Riedel. Now you know why we strive to have
an entertainment section in The St. Bernard News. THIS IS LOUI-
SIANA ENTERTAINMENT, -- and we are proud of this locally filmed
production!

thing Samuel has been warn-

GRANDMA The movie, starring
Tsai Chin, is the feature directo-
rial debut of Sasie Sealy. “Lucky
Grandma” held its world pre-
miere at the 2019 Tribeca Film
Festival as the second recipient
of the AT&T Presents: Untold
Stories $1 million grant initiative
and went on to an international
premiere at the BFI London Film
Festival. Set in New York’s Chi-
natown, Chin portrays an ornery,
newly-widowed 80-year-old ea-
ger to live life as an independent
woman, despite her family’s
concerns. When a local fortune
teller (Wai Ching Ho) predicts a
most auspicious day in her fu-
ture, she decides to head to the
casino, only to land herself on
the wrong side of luck by sud-
denly attracting the attention of
local gangsters. She then em-
ploys the services of a body-
guard from a rival gang, played
by Corey Ha. “Lucky Grandma
is a dynamic comedy with a
stand-out performance by Tsai
Chin. A new song by Akwafina
is also featured.
THE GHOST OF PETER
SELLERS by Peter Medak The
Telluride lauded film from Dir.
Peter Medak (The Changeling,
The Ruling Class, Breaking Bad,
Hannibal, The Krays, House,
The Wire) is a classic take on
a "movie within a movie", Me-
dak documenting his own failed
1973 comedy, The Ghost of the
Noonday Sun starring (and sab-
otaged by) Peter Sellers. Years
later, Medak's still haunted by
the experience, reflecting on a
disastrous production, his ev-
er-lasting love for Sellers, Spike
Milligan (Monty Python) and film
at large.
L'innocent Gabrielle d'Annun-
zio's passionate novel is brought
to life in the final masterpiece
from acclaimed director Luchi-
no Visconti. In late-nineteenth
century Italy, an insatiable aris-
tocrat, grows bored with his
timid wife and neglects her for
his more exciting mistress. After
learning that his wife is having
a torrid affair of her own, he be-
comes tormented by her infidel-
ity and descends into madness.
Vitalina Verla Pedro Costa's
latest, a film of deeply concen-
trated beauty, stars nonprofes-
sional actor Vitalina Varela in a
truly remarkable performance. A
Cape Verdean woman who has
come to Fontainhas for her hus-
band’s funeral after being sepa-
rated from him for decades due
to economic circumstance, and
despite her alienation begins
to establish a new life there.
The grief of the present and the
ghosts of the past commingle
in Costa’s ravishing chiaroscuro
compositions, a film of shadow
and whisper that might be the
director’s most visually extraor-
dinary work.
Bacurau A vibrant, richly di-
verse back-country Brazilian
town finds its sun-dappled day-
to-day disturbed when its in-
habitants become the targets of
a group of armed mercenaries.
The perpetrators of this class
warfare, however, may have
met their match in the fed-up,
resourceful denizens of little Ba-
curau. With references to the
fearless genre works of John
Carpenter, George Miller, and
Sergio Leone, Bacurau, winner
of the Jury Prize at the Cannes
Film Festival, is a vividly angry
power-to-the-people fable like
no other.
Corpus Christi A modern dra-
ma of mistaken identity, fraud,
and possible beatification.
When a 20-year-old juvenile de-
linquent, recently released from
detention, comes to a small
village, he is mistaken for their
new priest. His passion, charis-
ma, and wildly unconventional
methods help heal traumatized
residents. A sincere man of
God, a con artist, or a redeemed
criminal atoning for his past?
Inspired by true events, a mag-
netic performance by Bartosz
Bielenia in the lead keeps us
guessing – in this breakthrough
for Polish director Jan Komasa.
The Wild Goose Lake A for-
malist gangster thriller drenched
in reds and blues, though im-
bued with a melancholic tone
that speaks to contemporary
China’s vast economic dispar-
ities, the elegantly down-and-
dirty The Wild Goose Lake, set
in the nooks and crannies of
densely populated Wuhan, fol-
lows the desperate attempts of
small-time mob boss Zhou Ze-
nong (the charismatic Hu Ge)
to stay alive after he mistakenly
kills a cop and a dead-or-alive
reward is put on his head.

The Hottest August is a curi-
ous map of a city’s fraught con-
sciousness. With an anthropo-
logical conceit, the film offers a
survey of humanity on the brink
of extinction. The threats of cli-
mate change, late capitalism,
and newly emboldened hatred
and racism loom large over di-
rector Brett Story’s interviews
with New Yorkers from all five
boroughs in August 2017. Ex-
quisite compositions set off the
urban habitat in surprising ways,
and Story frequently finds visu-
al interest in large-scale scenes:
expansive cityscapes, endless
rows of windows and rooftops;
skies cloudy with foreboding,
yet filled with painterly beauty.
This global scope reflects the
film’s structural methods, which
abandon a singular narrative
thread for a collage of experi-
ence and emotion. It’s a time
capsule that’s observations,
cynical and tender alike, will re-
verberate well into the future.
CRESCENDO by Dror Zahavi
When world-famous conductor
Eduard Sporck accepts the job
to create an Israeli-Palestinian
youth orchestra, he is quickly
drawn into a tempest of sheer
unsolvable problems. Hav-
ing grown up in a state of war,
suppression or constant risk of
terrorist attacks, the young mu-
sicians from both sides are far
from able to form a team. Lined
up behind the two best violinists
– the emancipated Palestinian
Layla and the handsome Israeli
Ron – they form two parties who
deeply mistrust each other, on
and off-stage alike. Will Sporck
succeed and make the young
people forget their hatred, at
least for the three weeks until
the concert? With the first glim-
mer of hope, however, the po-
litical opponents of the orches-
tra show them how strong they
are…Loosely inspired by Daniel
Barenboim’s West-Eastern Di-
van Orchestra, Academy-Award
nominated director Dror Zaha-
vi (“Alexander Penn”, “Every-
thing for my Father”) directs this
gripping drama as a constantly
growing ‘crescendo’, rising the
tension and conflicts until the
last frame. Lead actor Peter
Simonischek (“Toni Erdmann”)
stars next to a highly convinc-
ing selection of up-and-com-
ing actors like Daniel Donskoy
(“Victoria”) and Sabrina Amali
(“4 Blocks”). A remarkable work
of cinema and a critical contri-
bution to the world-wide efforts
towards understanding, human-
ity and peace.
SATANTANGO by Bela Tarr
One of the greatest achieve-
ments in recent art house cine-
ma and a seminal work of “slow
cinema,” Sátántangó, based on
the book by László Kraszna-
horkai, follows members of a
small, defunct agricultural col-
lective living in a post-apoca-
lyptic landscape after the fall of
Communism who, on the heels
of a large financial windfall, set
out to leave their village. As a
few of the villagers secretly con-
spire to take off with all of the
earnings for themselves, a mys-
terious character, long thought
dead, returns to the village, al-
tering the course of everyone’s
lives forever. Shot in stunning
black-and-white by Gábor Med-
vigy and filled with exquisitely
composed and lyrical long takes,
Sátántangó unfolds in twelve
distinct movements, alternating
forwards and backwards in time,
echoing the structure of a tango
dance. Tarr’s vision, aided by
longtime partner and collabora-
tor Ágnes Hranitzky, is enthrall-
ing and his portrayal of a rural
Hungary beset by boozy dance
parties, treachery, and near-per-
petual rainfall is both transfixing
and uncompromising. Sátán-
tangó has been justly lauded
by critics and audiences as a
masterpiece and inspired none
other than Susan Sontag to pro-
claim that she would be “glad to
see it every year for the rest of
[her] life”. Sátántangó has been
restored in 4K from the original
35mm camera negative by Ar-
belos in collaboration with The
Hungarian Filmlab. 439 mins.
EXTRA ORDINARY Rose
(Maeve Higgins), a mostly sweet
& lonely small-town driving in-
structor, must use her supernat-
ural talents to save the daugh-
ter of Martin (Barry Ward, also
mostly sweet & lonely) from a
washed-up rock star who is
using her in a Satanic pact to
re-ignite his fame. Grand Jury
Award finalist at the 2019 SXSW
Film Festival! Also starring Will
Forte. Claudia O’Doherty, Jamie
Beamish, etc.
MOSSVILLE: WHEN GREAT
TREES FALL Mossville, Louisi-
ana, a community founded by
formerly enslaved African Amer-
icans, was once a thriving, safe
haven. Today it’s a breeding
ground for petrochemical plants
and their toxic black clouds.
Many residents are forced from
their homes; those that stay suf-
fer from prolonged exposure to
contamination and pollution.
Amid this chaos stands one
man, Stacey Ryan, who refuses
to abandon his family’s land and
fights for basic human rights in
this powerful portrait of resil-
ience. From the makers of Big
