Resources for SLCC Student Veterans
School Resources:
Campus Childcare Program: The Child Care and Family Services mission is to assist Salt Lake
Community College student parents by providing quality childcare services and family resources.
Our vision is to provide compassionate, reliable and pragmatic services to all student parents
and their children in the areas of financial need, parenting and family education, and access to
quality childcare.
The SLCC administration is concerned with each child's social and developmental needs, and is
committed to providing parent students with services, resources and practical tools that will
help develop and improve parenting skills, while in pursuit of their educational goals. Providing a
high level of childcare services and a well-planned educational program will not only help in
meeting their educational and personal needs but assist in improving their persistence and
retention at the College. More detailed information is all HERE
Disability Resource Center: The DRC at SLCC works with veterans one-on-one to resolve any
problems with school that are immediately impacted by any disabilities one may have been
experiencing. You do not need to have a VA service-connected disability rating to use this
service, but you do need to have some sort of proof of need established through a license
counselor or clinical professional. If you do not have one, but suspect that you may need
accommodation anyway, our veteran’s liaison can help you to get set up with one of the health
professionals affiliated with the school to receive the appropriate documentation to show your
proof of need. Our Accessibility Advisor for Veterans is Mary Keinz who can be reached at 801-
957-4659 or her email at mary.kein[email protected]
Student Mental Health Clinic: you will need to fill out a couple of forms for intake and agreeing
to the services at the school counseling center (I have attached them to this email). The visits at
the counseling center are $15 and you will need to book an appointment through their website
at this link. Once all of that is done, they will have you come in to meet with their nurse
practitioner to complete the testing.

Career Services Center: Career Services is a team of trained Career Coaches and Employer
Specialists who are here to support students and alumni by helping them create individualized
life plans. Their goal is to help students better understand who they are, what they want to do
professionally, and what steps they need to take to get there. Seeing a Career Coach early and
often, is the most important step towards achieving this goal and feeling confident in one’s
career direction. Need help exploring careers, areas of study, finding a job or internship,
networking or negotiating best practices, or want to know more about your unique skillsets?
Contact our liaison Daniel Hooten at 801-957-4807 or his email at dan.hooten@slcc.edu
FAFSA Assistance: SLCC FAFSA Advisors are available and ready to assist the community with
one-on-one completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Although
appointments are appreciated, call-ins are welcome. You do not have to be a student or
prospective student of SLCC to receive help.
When you call to get FAFSA assistance, please have the following on hand for quick and easy
reference:
Your Social Security Number
For 2021-2022 FAFSA: Your 2019 federal income tax return, W-2s and other income
records
For 2022-2023 FAFSA: Your 2020 federal income tax return, W-2s and other income
records
Major Exploration: Advisers are all listed HERE for you to schedule an appointment to help
figure out what major options you have available to you. Please speak with them to get set up to
do the Personal Interest Inventory and your Myers Briggs Typing Personality Tests to determine
what pathways would be the best fit for you personally.
Requesting Certification: Once your registration is done, you will go to our website to request
that the VA certifies your benefits. That form will need to be done EVERY SEMESTER to assure
that the VA knows that you are still using your benefits to attend classes. That form is here:

SLCC LGBTQ+ Resources: Salt Lake Community College has a strong initiative to enhance the
quality of life of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning SLCC students,
faculty, and staff in an environment that is welcoming, positive, and safe, by increasing the SLCC
community's awareness, understanding, and inclusion of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
queer, and questioning members. If you would like more information or wish to reach out to
someone in the LGBTQ+ Center at SLCC, please go the website
http://www.slcc.edu/lgbtq/index.aspx
Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs: Currently we at SLCC have support resources for
Black, Latina/o/x, Asian, Native American and Pacific Islander students specifically. They are here
to make sure that all our students have free access and peace of mind while attending school
regardless of their personal journey and struggles. If you would like to hear more information
and reach out to someone for access to these resources, please go their website at
https://www.slcc.edu/diversity/resources.aspx
Student Writing & Reading Center: Student Writing & Reading Center (SWRC) consultation
services are available to all SLCC students online and in-person. Online consultations are both
live and through written feedback. We have in-person locations at Taylorsville Redwood, South
City, Jordan and West Valley. To access SWRC services, create an account on our Student
Writing & Reading Center site at https://www.slccswc.org/ and then verify it through Bruinmail.
For any technical support, please email slccswc@gmail.com.
Residency Form: I have attached to this email a copy of the military residency exception
form. You will return this form as well as the copy of your driver’s license and vehicle
registration to the contact located on the form in the top, right-hand block.
VA Resources:
Voc Rehab and VA Benefits: If you are having issues getting in touch with your VR&E counselor
at the VA and would like to reach out to Dr. Mike Foster, you can get a hold of him at his email
[email protected] . He can help you also take a more in-depth look at Voc Rehab in
general and help determine the best path to make the best use of your VA benefits while in
school.
Vet Center: Life isn't always easy after a deployment. That's where Vet Centers can help. Vet
Centers across the country provide a broad range of counseling, outreach, and referral services
to combat Veterans and their families. Vet Centers guide Veterans and their families through
many of the major adjustments in lifestyle that often occur after a Veteran return from combat.
Services for a Veteran may include individual and group counseling in areas such as Post-
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), alcohol and drug assessment, and suicide prevention referrals.
All services are free of cost and are strictly confidential.
Walk-in visitors are welcome; however, appointments are encouraged. Anyone wishing to
schedule an appointment with the Vet Center Readjustment Counselor may do so by contacting
Travis Larsen or Candace Arbogast (located at the Salt Lake Vet Center) at 1 - (800) 613-4012,
extension 1294, or (801) 584-1294. For more information about the VA’s Readjustment
Counseling Service and Vet Centers go to: www.vetcenter.va.gov.
VA Work Study: Work study information can be found HERE. If you are interested in pursuing a
work study position as well as any grant-funded positions through Veterans Services, please feel
free to contact our Director Steve Hill at steve.hill@slcc.edu
Daybreak VA Outpatient Clinic: Sometimes getting up to the main VA facilities at the George E
Wahlen VA Hospital is a little more trouble than it is worth. Utah is a big place, and the VA has
realized that our veteran population away from their main hub needs better access to
healthcare through their benefits. That is why the newly remodeled Daybreak CBOC is open and
readily available to support our veterans out on the west bench. They are located at 5119 W
Daybreak Pkwy, South Jordan, UT 84095. You can walk in and speak to someone about meeting
with a physician regularly at this location, contact them through your My Health E Vet portal, or
you can call them at (801) 417-5734. For more information and hours of operation please go to
their website at https://www.saltlakecity.va.gov/locations/western_sl_cboc.asp
VA Patient Advocate:
Mary Smith

VA Tobacco Cessation Program: There is a long history of smoking and other tobacco use in the
military. Many Veterans used tobacco while they served, particularly during deployment. Now
seven out of every 10 Veterans who smoke would like to quit for both the physical benefits
and their mental health.
A majority of them are successful.
If you’re one of those Veterans, or if the Veteran in your life is trying to quit, you’ve come to the
right place. VA offers resources for making a quit plan and sticking to it.
It’s been said before and it’s true: You can quit smoking. And we want to be there when you do.
For more information on how to get into the program, please visit
https://www.mentalhealth.va.gov/quit-tobacco/ , speak to any VA provider, or the support
specialists at the welcome desk at the George E. Whalen VA Hospital.
Community Resources:
Utah CHIP Program: The Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, is a state health
insurance plan for uninsured Utah kids and teens. Emergency medical costs can quickly break
your budget. With CHIP, you’ll have one less thing to worry about. Find out if your family
qualifies! https://chip.health.utah.gov/

Veterans Upward Bound Tutoring: Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a program dedicated to
helping first generation students from a military-connected background to excel in school. As
such, they have employed the assistance of our tutors that work one-on-one with our veterans
and military students in the areas of math and English. I remind you that they will have you fill
out a brief form to confirm your veterans status at their website HERE before having one of
them reach out to you to set up tutoring sessions. They are currently operating solely online via
phone and video conferencing to accommodate your needs.
