A Parish Prayer
Almighty God, my parish is
composed of people like me. I
help make it what it is. It will
be friendly if I am. It will be
holy if I am. Its pews will be
filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I
work. It will be prayerful if I pray. It will make
generous gifts to so many causes if I am a generous
giver. It will bring other people into its worship if I
invite and bring them. It will be a parish family of
loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of
compassion, charity and mercy if I — who make it
what it is — am filled with the same qualities.
Therefore, with the help of God, I will dedicate
myself to the task of being all the things that I want
my parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God, Bless
my journey, Lord God, that I might follow Jesus
and build the Church for Your glory. Amen.
Our Deceased Loved Ones
Please remember in your prayers
our recently deceased and all the
deceased members and friends of
Saint John Vianney Parish,
especially,
Joseph Paquette and Jennifer Morrison.
Eternal rest grant unto to them, O Lord, and
let perpetual light shine upon them. May they
rest in peace. Amen.

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Welcome back, everyone, to the start of a new academic
and pastoral year! I hope you have had some nice opportunities
for summer fun and relaxation. The start of a new academic and
pastoral year can be for many of us an exhilarating time for new
learning and growth. We are happy to share some of the many
spiritual celebrations, study initiatives, service projects, and
social gatherings for the coming year.
From the very beginning of the foundation of the Church,
the disciples of the Lord have gathered for specific reasons. We read in the Acts of the
Apostles, They (the disciples) devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to
the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to prayers. Here we have four
principal activities of the first disciples, gathered as the first parish. In shorthand, we
can summarize the mission of the Parish in these four apostolic activities or the four
Ss: Spiritual celebrations, Study initiatives, Service projects, and Social gatherings.
Spiritual Celebrations (First Ministry of Parish Life)
The first and primary purpose of the Parish is to provide spiritual support to our
people. Pre-eminently, this spiritual support comes in the form of the gift of the grace of
the sacraments. The seven sacraments were instituted by Christ and entrusted to the
Church for our well-being and salvation. With our celebration and active participation
in the sacraments, pre-eminently the Holy Eucharist and Penance, our people have the
necessary graces for holy and happy lives. I take this opportunity to strongly encourage
you to prioritize the Eucharist through Sunday and daily Mass as well as Penance
through our weekly scheduled confessions in the upcoming year. If you go to Sunday
Mass, why not try adding one daily Mass per week? Likewise, if you go to confession
periodically, why not make it a monthly commitment? This is principally how we
grow in holiness, the effects of which change life completely.
The Parish serves the spiritual needs of our people not only in the regular
celebration of Masses and confessions, but also in celebrating the other sacraments at
important moments in the life of our people: Baptisms, Confirmations, Anointings of
the Sick, Marriages and Holy Orders.
As St. Ignatius of Loyola shared, Our joys shared are doubled; and our burdens
shared are halved. The Parish serves our spiritual needs not only at happy times, at the
time of baptisms, first communions, confirmations, and weddings, but also at difficult
times, in time of sickness and in death. Assisting families at the death of loved ones
with funeral liturgies is one of our many sacred duties.
Although celebrating the sacraments with beauty and devotion is the high point
of the spiritual life of the Parish, the spiritual celebrations of the Parish also include
celebrating many religious events throughout the year, such as Forty Hours Annual
celebration in the fall, the Lenten Mission Retreat in the spring, Holy Souls Mass, the
Healing Mass, the Wedding Anniversaries Mass, and many other special spiritual
celebrations. Cont. next page...
Pastor’s Letter
+Dear Friends,
23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Sunday, September 8, 2024)
4 September 8, 2024
Daily rosary and Lenten Stations of the Cross are wonderful devotions which are
available for our people to participate.
Our Parish also sponsors guest speakers who provide opportunities for us to
deepen our understanding and appreciation of spiritual matters.
During the liturgical year, the Parish also celebrates special liturgical seasons
(viz., Advent, Christmas, Ordinary time, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter Season) which
are designed to highlight various aspects of Our Lords life and ministry, providing us
with opportunities to immerse ourselves more deeply into the sacred mysteries.
There are many spiritual opportunities not only to participate in the celebration of
sacred liturgies and communal devotions, but also opportunities for our people to serve
and to undertake special liturgical ministries such as serving as a Eucharistic Minister
(EM), lector, altar server, usher, cantor, choir member, altar guild society member, or
occasional sacristan. As you can see, many hands are needed for each well-planned and
beautifully celebrated liturgy. I take this opportunity to thank all our wonderful and
generous parishioners who serve as liturgical ministers.
In the coming weeks, at the beginning of this pastoral year, we will be
encouraging our people to consider serving this year in one of the liturgical
ministries.
Study (Second ministry of our Parish Life)
The second ministry or task of Parish life is religious education and faith
formation, which we can call the mission to Study, the second Safter the first task
of spiritual celebrations. Knowledge precedes love: if we want to love God and His
people better, we must enhance our understanding, our learning, and our knowledge of
God and His plan of salvation for us.
To accomplish this second task of the Parish, our Parish provides lots of
wonderful opportunities to grow in knowledge of our faith.
Our PREP program engages on a regular basis our children from grades one
through seven. We are happy to welcome over 120 students who will starting PREP
classes on Tuesday, September 17
th
and Wednesday, September 18
th
. Welcome back to
our students and catechists!
On Sundays, at the 10:30 AM Mass, we will offer the Childrens Liturgy of the
Word (CLOW) for little preschoolers (children from age 4 to fir st holy
communion), which is another opportunity for our youngsters to appreciation the
beauty of Gods creation.
The Parish also sponsors an Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)
program for those thinking to enter the Church. If anyone is interested in learning more
about the Catholic faith, kindly contact the Parish Offices.

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Our Parish also sponsors Bible study group, which can be accessed virtually.
Another important component of our Parish study programs is hosting various
guest experts to share their wisdom and experience.
Lastly, we have purchased a parish subscription to FORMED.com which offers
insightful and beautifully produced Catholic content to help us as individuals and
families understand how to have a lived relationship with Christ and the Church. This is
an excellent opportunity to learn in the comfort of ones own home. Whatever topic
most interests you (i.e., teaching of the Church, morality, relationships, mental health,
movies, books, etc.) there is Catholic content for that topic. Kindly go to
FORMED.com and sign up for free by selecting our parish in the registration page.
We encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities here at SJV to
grow in knowledge of the Lord and our Catholic Faith.
Service Projects (Third ministry of Parish Life)
Christians know that they are blessed with the spark of divine love within their
soul. And this divine love urges us to share our gifts with others. The Parish provides
opportunities for our people to be of service to others, especially those in need.
Each week, our parishioners can share their blessings with others by participating
in the Caring for Friendsfood program (where a meal tin can be obtained at the main
Church vestibules and your family can share a meal, by freezing a meal and then
dropping the frozen meal at the freezers in the Church garage); The frozen meals
prepared by our families are then transferred each Tuesday to ultimately the poor and
shut-ins of our region.
In addition, our people can participate regularly in making a small offering for
the poor in the Poor Box. The Parish uses the funds of the Poor Box exclusively for
those in need – and we partner with local Catholic programs like Saint Johns Hospice
and Women of Hope, both are Archdiocesan programs serving the homeless. The
Caring for Friends food program and the Poor Box contributions are just two means by
which we can regularly assist others.
Throughout the year, our Parish also sponsors food drives at Easter,
Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We also sponsor clothing drive and shaving kits for the
homeless. Our Parish will again host the Giving Tree at Christmas to provide presents
for children from families who are struggling. Our Parish also hosts a Kits for Babies
and Pregnant Mothers campaign. These are just a few of the wonderful service project
opportunities which are part of our Parish outreach to others.
I take this opportunity to thank all who participate in many of these good works
and service projects.
I encourage you all in this coming pastoral year to look for opportunities when
you and your family can be of service to others, especially those in most need.

IV. Social Gatherings (Fourth ministry of Parish Life)
Spending time together is important in family life and in parish life. So, our
Parish hosts various social gatherings to welcome and celebrate our life together as
Parish (viz., the family of families). Coming together is a chance to meet new people
and a chance to deepen our mutually supportive relationships with one another.
For example, next weekend, we are happy to invite all to the first Sunday Greet
and Gather Social of the year following the Sunday morning Masses. All are most
welcome.
In addition to periodic Sunday Greet and Gather Socials, we have a number of
fun community-building opportunities such as Trunk or Treat, Pancakes with Santa, and
more. We look forward to seeing you then!
Kindly stay tuned for more information about all these wonderful upcoming
events which are designed to meet the four ministries, tasks, and purposes of our Parish
Life (spiritual, study, service, and social).
I am delighted to share that we have prepared many good programs and
wonderful events for all our parishioners to participate and to share in the coming year.
Have a blessed week ahead! Let us strive together to grow in holiness! More good
things to come!
