Best Practices for Remote Video Recording
Things to consider before recording on a mobile device:
1. Check camera lens to make sure they are clean.
2. Place phone on a tripod or set down on something that can support the phone in a
level position.

Camera height should be roughly at eye level. Speaker should be standing to project better
into the microphone.

3. Place your phone in a horizontal position and adjust the angle to frame the face at the
top centre of the video. To appear more natural, look directly at the camera as much
as possible.

4. Check your lighting. The placement of light is key to the quality of your recording. Try
not to have the camera face the light directly to avoid shadows. You should position
yourself with the light directly on your face.
Pro tip: If you use natural sunlight by the window, keep in mind that the sun will shift, and
your lighting might not be consistent throughout your recording. Try using more than one
source of lighting for best results.

5. Check your background. Use a blank wall or a background that compliments you or the
content you are speaking about.
6. For best audio, choose a small room with carpet and furniture, if possible. Check for
background noises such as the hum of a dryer running, the heater kicking on, or any
other external noises from other rooms which can all come through as background
noise in a recording. Get as close to the microphone as the video will allow.
7. By default, phone record videos at 30 frames per second (fps). You should keep it at that
frame rate.
8. Be mindful of your attire. Wear something that compliments your lighting and is not too
distracting for the viewers.
How to Record on an iPhone:
1. Choose Video mode
2. Tap the Record button or press either volume button to start recording
3. Tap the Record button or press either volume button to stop recording
4. By default, video records at 30 frames per second (fps). Depending on your model, you can
choose other frame rates and video resolution settings in Settings > Camera > Record Video (faster
frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files)
On iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later, iPhone uses multiple microphones to achieve stereo sound. To
turn off stereo recording, go to Settings> Camera, then turn off Record Stereo Sound.
On iPhone 12 models, iPhone records video in HDR and shares HDR videos with devices using
iOS 13.4, iPad OS 13.4, macOS 10.15.4, or later; other devices receive an SDR version of the same
video. To turn off HDR recording, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video, then turn off HDR Video
How to Record on an Android Phone:
1. Slide the key over to Camera on the home screen
2. Select the video camera icon at the bottom right of the new camera screen
3. Press the red button to begin recording video
4. Shoot video for as long as you want. The duration of the video will tick off in the upper right
5. Click the red button again to stop the video
6. Click on the box in the upper right corner, this will allow you to view your newly shot video
