Dear Friends,
Our mission and passion at the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society
is to preserve, steward and educate about Duxbury, where history
and rural landscape have shaped this special place — past, present
and future. We care deeply about inspiring our growing communi-
ty and hope that you are filled with a similar passion for this place,
with its singular lore and beauty.
DRHS has been a part of the fabric of this community for 137 years,
but in 2020, our work has never felt more important. With the walls
of our world closing in and an uncertain future, it was essential to
stay connected to one another and to this very special place.
So this year, the DRHS explored and delivered new ways to come
to you, wherever you were. We forged a new path for historic
and rural preservation, education, and, most important of all,
conversation and connection: we held virtual Neighborhood
Walking Tours; we partnered with the Duxbury Free Library for
the Historic Duxbury Lego Contest; we oered self-guided tours
of Duxbury’s history and of local cemeteries; and, we encouraged
children anxious about returning to school in September to learn
about Duxbury’s School Houses throughout the years.
e theme for this year’s report is “Place Matters,” something
we’ve talked about throughout the past year. Duxbury’s abundant
rural beauty and history are filled with stories that infuse the sea,
soil, and homes here. Place Matters — not just because of Duxbury’s
shoreline beauty, nor just because of the extraordinary history that
happened here — but because those things collaborated to forge a
community that anchors us and gives us a way of making sense of
the world, even as it changes with every passing day.
Like you, we spent most of 2020 with our physical doors closed.
But thanks to you and your support, we flung our virtual doors
wide open. Our intrepid sta tucked our old plans away in a
drawer and went to work exploring new, online program ideas,
including our first online exhibition, Creating a Legacy: 400 Years
of Duxbury & the Pilgrims.
We developed innovative approaches for amplifying our mission,
created opportunities to interpret and share history in new ways,
and worked to engage new audiences, with new website oerings
for all ages, including our new Online Learning Page where you
can explore Duxbury’s history, lands, and people at any time and
om anywhere. Our updates on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook
are packed daily with pictures, historic stories, and informational
tidbits. Our Dateboard House page on our website features the
house histories of dozens of Dateboarded homes in Duxbury.
HISTORIC GARDENS
COMMITTEE
DRHS Gardens were ‘open
and available’ throughout
the seasons and even
with restrictions, DRHS
properties became a
haven and an opportunity
for members and friends
to be outside, walk, tend
and visit at a distance. We
are grateful to a number
of longstanding volunteer
partnerships, especially
with the Community
Garden Club of Duxbury
and the Duxbury Garden
Club for helping to
maintain DRHS properties.

And through it all, the work continues. Our collections were
catalogued, new acquisitions made, research completed, and
inquiries answered. Our focus may have shied with the
pandemic, but our mission did not. Restoration work at the
King Caesar House was completed with more than $100,000
generously funded by the Community Preservation Act of
Duxbury and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Our Lands Committee continued to embrace its expanded mission
to create professional guidelines and stewardship expectations
for the parcels in the DRHS Lands Portfolio. e DRHS laid the
groundwork for a Stewardship partnership with the Wildlands
Trust to provide support for maintaining DRHS lands, and
important Conservation Restrictions were placed on key parcels
of lands, legally protecting them for future generations.
We also completed important capital maintenance planning
to provide long range forecasts for our historic structures. A
professional buildings assessment was completed, laying the
groundwork for a multi-year plan for increased funding for
updating, maintaining and preserving our historic structures
jointly proposed by the Properties and Investment Committees
and approved by the Board of Trustees.
DRHS is more than just a historical society—we are a community,
a place of purpose and refuge, a place for serious, research,
learning, celebrations, solace, and healing. Our in-person events
and programs were curtailed, but our many volunteers continued
their hard work. It was especially heartwarming to see the
response to programs like Christmas at King Caesar, with the
wonderful hand-made ornaments that adorned our Community
Tree and reminded us of the community all around.
A special thank you to the volunteers in fundraising, and finance
who helped us to “steady the ship” and recalibrate our year. To all
of our volunteers, a heartfelt message: we miss you, and we cannot
wait to be together again.
We begin this new year with gratitude for the support of so many
in a dicult year and with a renewed focus on making the next
year a fulfilling one, whatever it brings. Perhaps, when we cannot
see ahead, we can let history guide us.
Your generous iendship and support make it all possible. We
could not do this work without you.
ank you,
Erin McGough Sally Redmond

FROM OUR OUTREACH MANAGER
A year ago, I never could have predicted how many unexpected
surprises 2020 held in store for us. While there can be a tendency
to focus on all that was lost to the pandemic, in Duxbury, and at
the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society, there were numerous
“silver linings.”
Circumstances beyond our control compelled us to change our habits
and rethink virtually all our programming. In lieu of our traditional
gatherings, we held online events and worked to provide our commu-
nity with opportunities to explore Duxbury, and discover its history,
in safe, socially-distant ways. For example, we developed a driving
tour and two cemetery tours with family activity guides that could be
accessed om our website. ese allowed members and the public to
venture on their own to visit and learn about many town landmarks.
In addition, we oered numerous lectures “live” over Zoom,
including three neighborhood tours by Tony Kelso, an author talk
on “Barons of the Sea” by Steven Ujifusa, and an opening for our
online exhibit “Creating a Legacy.” While we certainly missed seeing
our valued members in person, some benefits of the virtual setting
included that we were able to oer neighborhood tours in less
walkable parts of town, more people than ever before were able to
join us for neighborhood and cemetery tours, and members could
gather om far and wide for these events. Indeed, many of our
online events this year had a national registration!
With the DRHS mission at the heart of each project, there were also
multiple opportunities for our community members to reflect and
create. When the pandemic began, we encouraged schoolchildren
to submit essays on life during quarantine to become part of our
permanent collection at the Drew Archives. During the summer of
2020, we held a Historic Duxbury Lego Contest in collaboration
with the Duxbury Free Library, and, over the holidays, instead of
our usual party and decorated house tours, we welcomed members
to create ornaments for a Community Tree, to commemorate the
49
th
annual Christmas at King Caesar Event. Submissions for each of
these projects were beautiful and thoughtful reflections on Duxbury
and the times we are living in.
I must also add that I found my work for the DRHS to be especially
fulfilling during this time of great change and uncertainty. It was an
immeasurable comfort to learn and work together with members
and colleagues for the benefit of our community. I look forward
to the year ahead, when we can come together for more learning,
discovery, and fun!
Respectfully Submitted,
Sabrina A. Kaplan

COMMITTEE
We are fortunate that
due to the depth
of knowledge and
experience of our
Committee members and
the disciplined efforts
of our managers, our
portfolios endured the
volatility and achieved
a positive return over
the past scal year.
The returns provided a
combination of income
and growth that were
in-line with benchmarks
used to measure market
performance.

our website regularly for updates on these events and more: www.duxburyhistory.org/events.
