Program Description: The Surgical Technologist is an integral member of the surgical team.
The Surgical Technologist works closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and registered
nurse to deliver direct patient care before, during, and after surgery. This degree plan
combines classroom teaching with supervised clinical experience for the surgical
technologist. Emphasis is placed on the proper application of sterile technique and modern
technology to patient care in the operating room. The student will receive information in
anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, surgical pathology, and surgical
procedures along with the standard practices involved in surgical technology. Upon
completion of the program the student is qualified to take the national certification
examination for surgical technologists.
Students working toward admission into a Health Sciences Program are required to declare
General Studies in Pre-Health Sciences degree as their major until they are officially accepted into a program.
Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to a specific health science program of study as these programs have additional
requirements that must be met.
The following items are required by health sciences programs, but deadlines may vary by program. Please see division and program
websites for specific details.
Completed and submitted immunizations prior to submitting an application
Proof of health insurance
Criminal background check
Drug screen
Current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare
providers
Completed health data form
Verification of annual tuberculosis status
Completed program information session
Technical Standards:
Health Sciences programs establish technical standards and essential functions to insure that students have the abilities required to
participate and potentially be successful in all aspects of the respective programs. Students are required to meet published technical
standards and essential functions for the program. See specific program website for details.
Additional Requirements:
Each program has specific admission requirements - see program website for detailed information.
The Surgical Technology program reserves the right to make changes to the degree plan and program requirements as circumstances required.

Career Information
Surgical technologists work as members of a healthcare team alongside physicians and surgeons, registered nurses, and other
healthcare workers. Before an operation, surgical technologists prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and
equipment. They also prepare patients for surgery by washing and disinfecting incision sites, positioning the patients on the
operating table, covering them with sterile drapes, and taking them to and from the operating room. Surgical technologists prepare
sterile solutions and medications used in surgery and check that all surgical equipment is working properly. They help the surgical
team put on sterile gowns and gloves.
During an operation, surgical technologists pass instruments and supplies to surgeons and first assistants. They also hold retractors,
hold internal organs in place during the procedure, or set up robotic surgical equipment. Technologists also may handle specimens
taken for laboratory analysis. Once the operation is complete, surgical technologists may apply bandages and other dressings to the
incision site. Hospitals will continue to be the primary employer, although much faster employment growth is expected in offices of
physicians and in outpatient care centers, including ambulatory surgical centers.

and Sciences (BAAS) is an option for students who have earned an AAS degree who want to complete a 4-year degree. These
degrees apply non-transferable courses and work experience towards the degree. You still must meet general education
requirements and take upper level courses.
Transfer Guides: The universities listed here do not constitute an ACC endorsement. Transfer course evaluations and determination
of which courses will count toward a bachelor’s degree are made by the receiving transfer institution.
