Full speed ahead! A most important Pearl Harbor relic, the bridge mounted engine order telegraph from CL49 U.S.S. St. Louis, the
only major warship to escape the Pearl Harbor attacks. Earning eleven Battle Stars for meritorious participation in battle, the U.S.S.
St. Louis saw incredible action throughout The Pacific Theater in World War II and earned the nickname "The Lucky Lou" for its
continued unlikely survival. Present at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 the warship was fired upon and nearly torpedoed, but its
crew was able to gun down three Japanese fighter pilots and instead The Lucky Lou became the only major warship to power up and
steam out of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.Following the events at Pearl Harbor, The Lucky Lou went on to play a major role in
battles throughout The Pacific Theater including The Battle of the Green Islands, The Battle of Kula Gulf, The Battle of
Kolumbangera, The Marianas Campaign, and The Philippines Campaign. Throughout the four years The U.S.S. St. Louis was active
in the war it was hit by aerial bombs, torpedoed, and even struck by kamikaze pilots ? nevertheless, the ship stayed true to its
nickname and never sank or even sustained mortal damage. Following its tenure in the United States Navy, The Lucky Lou was
recommissioned to the Brazilian Navy in 1951, until 1976. In 1980 the ship was sold to shipbreakers in Taiwan, but along the way it
tore apart and finally foundered off the coast of South Africa. The engine order telegraph is a communications device used on a ship
to transfer orders of change in speed or direction from the bridge to the control room. Traditional E.O.T.?s, such as The U.S.S. St.
Louis,? required a pilot wanting to change speed to "ring" the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on
the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and signal the change in order on a twin telegraph. This telegraph from The U.S.S.
St. Louis retains its original specification plate from Bendix Cory of Brooklyn, New York. The plate is engraved U.S.S. St. Louis ?
CL49. Double engine ford. Trans & Ind. (order transmitter and indicator). Bendix Marine Products Co. Inc. Brooklyn, N.Y. Polished
steel base, brass head components, and handles, bell and electric box. Original faceplates with Cory logo and ship commands,

Four bottles raised from the wreck of The White Star Liner RMS Republic which sank in 1909 off the coast of Nantucket. These
bottles were raised in 1988. These bottles were purchased at an auction conducted by Guernseys at the museum of Yachting,
Newport Rhode Island, 1988. Present here are a Champagne, Chardoonay and two beer bottles. Far off, in the North Atlantic's most
treacherous area, just a few years before the almighty Titanic proved that nothing was unsinkable; another passenger liner went
under near Nantucket, the RMS Republic. Down, almost 300 feet into the shark infested ocean she sank and took with her an
unimaginable treasure, one that would surpass the dreams of any man. The RMS Republic was a beautiful luxury liner, especially for
her time. She departed in late January 1909 and was headed to the Mediterranean ports despite being caught up in a very dense
fog. She held her own throughout the night but in the morning hours of the next day she collided with the SS Florida. The furious
slam that the RMS Republic took from the SS Florida was fierce and demolished the engine room which ceased all the power to the
liner. Unbelievably, most passengers and crew were rescued, but three lives were lost for each ship. The SS Florida was
salvageable but the RMS Republic sank deep to the ocean floor. At this point the Titanic has not yet sunk and this ship was the most
technologically advanced of that time too, was considered unsikable. While the lives were spared during this catastrophe, none of
the cargo was as fortunate. Everything was lost to sea and there was no way to retrieve it. Until 1987.

Hilldale Road Cheam, Surrey, SM1 2JA, ENGLAND. 17.9.96, Dear Sir, I am writing a book about my work in Wireless Intelligence in
WW2. I was stationed at Beaumanor in Leicestershire where we intercepted the German wireless networks, the messages we took
were decoded at Bletchley Park. We had your figurehead in the stableyard, but in our day it was complete with its scroll, sword,
arms, and tailcoat. It was wrongly identified and instead of it being returned to its Naval dockyard after the war it mysteriously
disappeared and turned up in America. I mentioned it in my book, "ENGLAND NEEDS YOU, The story of Beaumanor Y station
WW2". My research has been long and the story of Cornwallis, I have been asked to write also. My book is soon to go to the
Government for vetting, as the story of Beaumanor has never before been told and then to be published. When i have completed
Beaumanor I will write the story of your figurehead. I thought you might be interested as the figurehead will retain its value when it
has its identity back again. If you are interested I will keep you advised of the book's progress. I enclose a small photocopy of

Cornwallis as he was in 1943. I look forward to hearing from you, Yours Sincerely, Mrs. Joan Nicholls. - HMS Cornwallis was a Royal
Navy 54-gun fourth rate. Jemsatjee Bomanjee built the Marquis Cornwallis of teak for the Honourable East India Company (EIC)
between 1800 and 1801. In March 1805 Admiral Sir Edward Pellew purchased her from the Company shortly after she returned from
a voyage to Britain. She served in the Far East, sailing to Australia and the Pacific Coast of South America before returning to India.
In February 1811 the Admiralty renamed her HMS Akbar. She captured forts and vessels in the Celebes and Amboyna, and
participated in the invasion of Isle de France, and the 1811 invasion of Java. She also served in the West Indies before being laid up
at Portsmouth in December 1816. She then stayed in Britain in a number of stationary medical and training capacities until the
Admiralty sold her in the 1860s. The EIC had Marquis Cornwallis built for long-range convoy escort duties. As such, she was a
spar-decked frigate. As of 1 January 1802 she was under the command of Captain Thomas Hardie. In December 1801, she sailed,
together with Upton Castle (a country ship), Betsey (an armed HEIC brig), some other vessels, and 1000 troops to Daman and Diu to
persuade the Portuguese governor to resist any French incursion. The expedition was under the command of Captain John
Mackellar, of the Royal Navy, whose own vessel, Terpsichore, was not ready for sea. The governor accepted the British
reinforcements, which, as it turned out, were not needed. Marquis Cornwallis, under the command of Captain Isaac Godsalve
Richardson, left Bombay on 7 Feb 1803, reaching St Helena on 12 May, and arriving at the Downs on 1 August. On 8 May 1804,
Marquis Cornwallis sailed from Portsmouth, still under Richardson's command. She sailed via St Helena to Bombay, where the
company intended for her to remain. She was convoying Marquis of Ely, Marchioness of Exeter, Lord Nelson, Brunswick, Princess
Charlotte, Marquis Wellesley, and Ann.
