use to help a child develop important lifelong skills. Use these tips to engage the child
in talking about the story, further developing vocabulary, comprehension and a love
of reading. Finally, use the provided materials and Activity Instructions to extend and
practice new skills.

Verbal Prompts
Before reading…
i Show the front cover of the book. Ask the children what they see in the tree.
i Point to the llama and ask what it is. Ask: Have you ever seen a llama?
i Ask: What is the title of the book? Point to the title. If they can’t say it, you say the rst
part (“Is your mama a….”) and let them nish by saying llama.
While reading…
i Encourage them to guess each time before turning the page to reveal another animal.
i Ask the children to name the animals they see on each page.
i What do you think this animal eats?
i How do the dierent animals carry their babies? What about the kangaroo?
The opossum?
i Who carried you when you were a baby? Did they carry you on their back?
In a pouch? In their arms?
Aer reading, ask…
i Who can tell me which animal hangs upside down to sleep?
i Who remembers which animal grazes on grass and says, “moo?”
i Which animal has flippers and eats sh all day?
i Which animal hops up and down and carries her baby in her pocket?
i If your name starts with the letter “L,” stand up.

1. Ask the child(ren) to nd and tear or cut out pictures of objects that start
with the letter L.
2. Help them as needed.
3. Ask them to tell you the name of the objects they nd.
4. Next they can glue the pictures on their construction paper.
5. Once they are nished, ask them to write their name on their paper.

Follow These Steps
1. Provide the child with a pencil.
2. Ask them to read the riddle aloud or help them read it by pointing to each
word as you read.
3. Once they gure out the answer, show the child where to write the answer
to the riddle. If they need help, you can print the word on another piece of
paper and let them copy or trace it.
